Whidbey Deep Sleep sleep pillow

People have leaned on local plants, flowers, and herbs to help with sleep for generations. Now it's our generation's turn to remember this and to deepen our relationship with local plants. The Whidbey Deep Sleep sleep pillow holds the wisdom of many of our ancestors and many beloved wise women. Curated by herbalist Lori, and this year Barbara helped make them. Community magic! Try out a sleep pillow, let go of your worries, leaning on local plants for a moment--just see what happens! We have two colors this year:

  • The dreamy blue bags were handprinted and handmade by Rihanna of local Feather & Fox in Langley. So lovely!
  • The cream bags are a bit thicker fabric and were handmade by a wonderful Etsy seller.

Locals who can come into our herbal studio—we will refill any of these bags for half price when you feel like the plants within have run out of magic.

To use: You can keep the sleep pillow near your bed (out of reach of young children and pets), squeeze it near your face, and inhale the scent deeply just before bedtime. Or tuck the herbal sleep pillow into your pillowcase or under your pillow, shut your eyes, and breathe deeply a few times until you drift off to sleep. Most people notice within one or two nights if the sleep pillow works for them. It's up to you when and how frequently to use your sleep pillow.

All of our sleep pillows use only our own dried plants themselves, not essential oils or fragrances, so they're gentle. The sleep pillows can be squeezed to reactivate the plant and flower scents, as needed, and they should last for a year or many more, depending on your climate and frequency of use. The cotton bags can also be unzipped and opened to add your own local dried herbs, plants, and flowers, as needed. If there are other plants that you consider or suspect will support your sleep, you could add some of your own dried plants too. If you add plants at any point, make sure they've been grown well away from human-sprayed poisons, dried thoroughly, picked through closely to remove bugs and other unwanted plants and nature bits, and talk to a few local wise women before tucking different plants in.

Herbal sleep pillows work really well for some people, and they don't work for others. If the sleep pillow doesn't work for you as a sleep pillow, don't fear, there are other uses for it: tuck it into a dresser drawer as a sachet or set it on a shelf in the laundry room or mud room to add subtle scent to the space, for example. Or give it to a family member or friend.

Whidbey Deep Sleep sleep pillow ingredients and packaging: Whidbey-grown hops (deep sleep support), lavender (relaxation support), lemon balm (support for lowering anxiety, decreasing stress, insomnia support), Douglas Fir (support for calming the mind), catmint (restful sleep support), and a pinch of rosemary (support for warding off bad dreams). All grown here at Ritual Mischief. The cotton bags are reusable. The sleep pillows filled with our herbs and plants are all at least 1 oz.

Important: Stop using the sleep pillow if your body is not happy with it. And if you're allergic to one or more of the plants in this sleep pillow, this may not be the best product for you.

I am not a medical doctor or a scientist, nor have I been pregnant or raised children. I lean on ever-deepening relationships with local forests, plants and herbs and flowers and lichen, local wise women, ancestors, other herbalists, insects, birds, and I love learning traditional folk ways from people who love to share them across old boundaries, every chance I get. I intentionally study forests and plants directly, plus community wellness and connectedness, resilience, self-organizing groups, playfulness and deep fun, and life as experienced by those with different ancestors than my own--because I believe these are what we need to learn more about right now.
