Handmade olive wood soap rest (or shampoo bar rest or dish soap bar rest) from Handmade Palestine
$28.00Our friends from Handmade Palestine craft these remarkably beautiful soap rests out of sustainably harvested olive wood gathered when they harvest their trees each autumn. Each one is unique, they are remarkably beautiful in person (we tried but photos just don't them justice), and they are heavier than expected. The words "heirloom quality" came into my head the moment I first picked one up. I don't know for sure if that's even possible, but if anyone could make a soap dish that lasts for generations, it's these wonderful, generous people and trees.
Visit Handmade Palestine to find more delightful items for home and for gift giving and to support these artisans. Visit their Olive Wood Workers page to learn more about the craftspeople who made these soap rests, and visit their About Us page to learn about the collective as a whole.
Note: Price is for one handmade olive wood soap rest without soap. The soaps are in these photos just to show the size and scale of the soap rest.
To use: Set one of our dish soap bars, soaps, shampoo bars, or doggie shampoo bars onto the soap rest to dry when not in use. These will hasten dry time and help ensure that your bar soaps last as long as possible. Place these outside of where they would receive regular spray from the faucet. The wood can handle regular spray, but our soaps will last much longer if they don't receive regular water spray.
Size and uniqueness: The handmade soap rests are 3.75 inches wide, 5.5 inches long, and 1.5 inches thick. They weigh between 4.4 and 5 ounces. Each one is unique. Olive wood can contain a wide variety of shades and grains from very dark to very light and from heavily grained to lightly grained.
Ingredients: Beloved land + beloved trees + olive wood + remarkable craftsmanship + stunning human ingenuity + resilience beyond belief + gratitude to an entire people who re-taught me the power of prayer + globe-spanning friendships
Emotionally local: We’re big fans of sourcing hyper local here, but every now and then our hearts deem someone “emotionally local” and we're old enough to trust our hearts. We have long-time Palestinian friends, and with them we have watched a horrifying and ongoing genocide of tens of thousands of civilians unfold in Gaza this past year, and we've felt beyond helpless and enraged watching our own government continue to fund it. These makers, and their lovely offerings, are emotionally local for me. My people. My people love trees, respect trees, care for trees and the land--no matter where they happen to be. If you you're in the pacific Northwest and want to stick with hyper local, I can offer you the names of many local soap rest makers instead. We also carry a local western red cedar soap rest by Teresa of Mountain Tree Farms in Arlington, WA too. Just holler.
